Volunteer Resources for Game Day

Essex Youth Hockey relies on the dedication of our family volunteers. Please remember that everyone should participate in supporting our skaters on game day.

Below please find resources that families can access to learn how to:

  • complete a score sheet for games
  • run the clocks at our 3 home rinks (Essex, Waterbury, Gutterson)
  • run the penalty box
  • Setup SignUp Genius for game day volunteers
  • How to connect to Essex Rink Bluetooth stereo for music HERE

Game Clock Resources

Penalty Box Monitor

  • Volunteer does NOT need Safesport credentials to monitor penalty box
  • Ensure that the penalty box is staffed with an adult for each game (must be over 21 years of age)
  • The Penalty box attendant is responsible for opening and closing doors when a player is assessed a penalty and sent to the box
  • Keep an eye on the clock and keep player informed so they are ready to go out when time is up. (you can open the door with 1 second left so player is on ice when time is up)
  • Please do not cheer loudly for your team, show / voice disapproval of player OR display any opposition to referee calls when you are serving as attendant
  • Try to keep the player calm and in good behavior while in box

Locker Room Monitor

Locker Room Monitor MUST be SafeSport Certified and pass a background check

  • Step 1: Register each year for USA Hockey as a Volunteer (no cost)

  • Step 2: SafeSport Program Training (90 minute initial training / 30 min refresher)

  • Step 3: Background Screening ($30 / takes 3-10 days to complete)

  • Step 4: Complete EYHA Volunteer Code of Conduct form

  • Review EYHA Locker Room Policy (see above)

    • One note - Locker room monitor should be in the locker room BEFORE the players enter the locker room both before practices / games AND at the end of a game / practice. There should always be an adult in the locker room while players are there - this is especially important when coaches are tending to responsibilities on the ice.

Using SignUp Genius

  • Using SignUp Genius for volunteer coordination works well.
  • Families also get to see who else is volunteering, what slots are open, etc.

      • Clock (1)
      • Penalty Box (2)
